Why Real Self Care is More Than a Bubble Bath

What springs to mind when you hear the words Self Care?Woman in bath

Making sure you grab half an hour to read your latest page-turner in peace after a busy day?

Making time to get to an exercise class?

A fun night out with your girlfriends – a few snatched hours away from the daily responsibilities of home, kids, work?

An hour to soak in a luxurious bubble bath with candles and your favourite glass of vino?

These are all fab examples of ways we can take care of our own needs.

Ways we can ensure that we refuel our own tanks so that we feel nourished and rested enough to be there for our loved ones. Without feeling like a martyr.

The Real Definition of Self Care

But true Self Care is so much more than that.

True Self Care is about treating ourselves as the most precious resource we will ever have.

Valuing ourselves so much that we won’t allow other people to drain and deplete our precious resources.

Our energy.

Our time.

Our money.

Our love.

Our kindness.

Our spirit.

How Do We Achieve This?

We achieve truly great Self Care when we have clear, healthy boundaries that we are willing to uphold for ourselves.

Not for other people. For us.

By not allowing other people’s dramas and demands to distract our attention away from our goals, our hopes, our dreams.

By not allowing other people’s behaviour to distract us from becoming who we are meant to be. From doing the work we are here to do.

It means having the courage to say No. And mean it.

Even when the other person is doing everything in their power to persuade us to say Yes.

Even when the other person is trying to manipulate us and make us feel that we are the one who is in the wrong.

Great Self Care means remaining true to who we are and to our values.

It’s no easy thing.

It’s easier in the moment to bend to other people’s wants and needs.

To say Yes to them. And No to ourselves.

Easy vs Hard

Having a bubble bath is easy.

Putting other people’s needs before our own wellbeing is easy.

Refusing to allow a loved one to abuse you is hard.

But your best life depends on it.

Your best life depends on you choosing you. For your own sake.

What will you choose?
